The Course 7 Jan – 30 Mar 2008
In brief. Your 3 month Gap Year programme provides you with South America orientation, intensive Spanish Language training, a trans Andes expedition on foot, horseback where you learn to plan and lead similar expeditions, followed by a tough development project in rural communities and National Parks. Finally you will travel down through Patagonia by road to Tierra del Fuego returning by air to Buenos Aires and back London
More detail. You fly to Buenos Aires, visit Recoleta and La Bocca, then travel by coach to an Atlantic beach for team building followed by a visit to an estancia and onto Bariloche. You will be based initially at the el Retorno lodge on Lago Gutierrez where you will learn Spanish and be introduced to your project. Local guides will take you mountain biking and white water rafting in the Nahuel Huapi National Park. You will ride with gauchos. You will be taught how to plan and lead an expedition, then you go on an expedition in the Andes, trekking across a mountain pass into Chile. Your camp gear will be carried by pack horse.
There are a choice of projects (normally 4 weeks) – conservation work in the National Parks, restoration work on narrow gauge railway and building projects for the local community.
You finish off by travelling through Patagonia where you will see the Perito Moreno Glacier and listen to whales at the Valdes peninsula..

Patagonia...
Although its name evokes the jagged Andes mountains, roaring rivers and crashing glaciers, Patagonia’s salient feature is its endless expanse of nothingness (Lonely Planet Guide). Routa quaranta (RN 40) which we travel along, parallels the Andes and remains an epic unpaved adventure passing the country’s most inaccessible places, the awesome Fitz Roy peaks and some archaeological gems. We will visit the Welsh settlement at Travelin.
