 Lake Wakatipu

Got here yesterday at 16.00 local time after a day of travelling. What a mission, but it was worth it when I saw the view out of the airport, awesome mountains! Got to the hotel about 30 mins later and its “sweet as” as they say here. The bowling alley is going to be cool, as will the bar and spa! Next were the room mates. One guy is from Winsor, and one guy is from Marseille, France. Completely off his rocker but sound as a pound. Met lots of people whose names I mostly can’t remember, and met Dahj and Stu. We had a couple of drinks to wind down after the flight, and now I’m going to bed!

Had a fairly lazy day today. We went into Queenstown, picked up our passes and learned some more about what was in store for the course and when. Queenstown is a great place. So much to do here. Met lots more people.

First Day

Mel and the hat

First Day on the slopes and the snow is better than I thought it’d be, but still quite unpredictable. We were shown around while everyone tried to find their legs.

We came up with a “dope of the day” concept and bought a pink glittery hat for it. But sods law, the first dope was Mel. She hit her goggles into her cheek and got a black eye. She was a good sport about it.

Alex and the hat

2nd day, but first day of training. Started off with a couple of us singing “I can see clearly now, the rain has gone”. And indeed it was an amazing day. A Beautiful landscape and sunshine. Worked on our skiing and discussed “stance and balance” all “arvo” as they say over ‘ere. Dope of the day went to Alex, for cutting himself by running over his own hand with his ski. Dahj told us we need to talk for around 10 mins, on absolutely any subject, as part of the SNSC. Don’t know what I’m going to do!

 Campbell and Robyn, how romantic?

Video analysis, and running through the basics of level 1 progression. I didn’t know I was so bad at side slipping! We set Campbell and Robyn for a little romantic dinner. Hilarious and they stuck through the whole dinner. DOTD was Stu, for stacking it 3 times.

We had half a day today, as the weather was awful, but snowing hard! We did some work in the hotel with our trainers. I put a lot of shaving foam in Pringles ear while he was asleep, but it was his fault because he shouldn’t have been asleep.

Bungee

Ricardo and the hat

Great snow and sunshine. Pulled off a 180! We did some switch riding most of the arvo. Went to a snowboard tuning demonstration, with some free beers. Then went to another bar, for more free beers! They also had “horizontal bungee”. Basically, there is a harness attached to the bungee cord. You run, to try to get to a drink, if you get it, you get flung back across the bar. Then you drink it as fast as you can. Then you it again with a yard glass! Absolutely hilarious.  DOTD goes to Riccardo, for missing the bus.

The International Man of Mystery

Girls attacked us in the hottub! They through snowballs and stole our clothes. This was the start of the war- Could be for the next two months. First weekend after a long week, so the crew went out to party. A number of people, including myself, gave pole dancing a go. We also found that Matt can not only pole dance, but break-dance. He's now "the international man of mystery". Eventually we ended up back at the hotel, for a good nights sleep. Well that was the plan anyway!

Powder!

After a restless sleep, Mark and myself ended up actually being up and ready for breakfast! Not only that but we also had time to get ready for the second shuttle up to the mountain for a sic session of fresh powder. I have to be honest, I was feeling a little worse for wear and it took me a few runs to get into the swing of things. It was amazing down the "Exchange". The powder had built up well and made all the jumps more fun and less scary, when it came to hitting them at high speeds.

After a few hours of riding we came down, and went onto Queenstown for some food. I had the best beef burger I have ever had! Fergburger and chips for £3.50!

Mark, Scott, Guy, Kev, George, Sam and myself all went lugeing. Essentially this is a three-wheeled shopping basket going down a concrete path at speed! I've injured myself more doing this than snowboarding. Mark Scott and me managed to flip the carts. I crashed into a snow bank. Mark actually flipped his and Guy crashed into him!

Then we played the most amazing game of mini-golf. I've never seen anything so complicated in my life. Machine lifting the balls through spaceships and all sorts. Its a definite must-do.

Hey Babe!

Yes! at last a decent day of rest! We all had a good lie in and only got up when we decided to go into town for another one of those amazing burgers. I'm sure they aren't good for you but I think I've earned it. Then we got back on the bus back to the hotel, and left Campbell and his skis all on his own, which was quite funny at the time.

On arrival at the hotel we discovered that Philipa, Laura and Charlotte were all heading for the spa. This was our chance...I ran and locked the door without them noticing, so they couldn't get back inside. Then I met up with Mark, Guy and Johnny. We then brought out the snowballs. Perfect end to the first week. And nothing else happened today. Oh yeah. The girls did us up in makeup. ahmm.

Back to basics

Toby and the team

Today was the start of the real-hard learning. No more laziness or anything, everything had to be done right now!

We started with a couple of warm up runs down the M1, then a quick stretch. We spent the rest of the morning practising our demos. A lot of them were one footed, for teaching people who had never been on a board.

The skiers also cracked into a lot of teaching progressions. Then we had a break for lunch. When we got back to the two-man, Stu had a surprise for us. We were going down the back-bowls..a double-black with loads of thing to throw ourselves off of, and lots of powder to go big! After that, with tired feet, we went back to double chair for more demo practice.

Guy and Mel cutting the cake

Much the same as Monday but with a little more freeride time!

We were focusing on riding from a solid stance. For me, I have to ride with my knees flexed more. We then practised our demos more and talk about teaching technique and movement analysis. At the end of the day we went a did Exchange, and for me it was clearly obvious that my riding style had completely changed for the better.

Today we had two birthdays in the group, Guy and Mel! This gave the whole group an excuse to go out! Buffalo bar again, resulting in more pole-dancing. I wasn't feeling my best after a big couple of days, so I decided to leave fairly early. From what I heard it would have been worth staying. The birthday boy and girl were given all sorts of strange and disgusting concoctions.

Steph practicing teaching

Once we were on the slopes, the fresh air did us some good, and for some reason I was riding very relaxed and better than usual. In the morning we worked on our free-riding, and the afternoon we practised our teaching for the first time. We had to try and pretend to show young children how to do exercises like side-slipping and floating-leaf. As simple as it sounds, its actually a lot harder than I thought, trying to keep it fun and interesting and simple. Its not only physically tiring too, but mentally.

When we got back down, we had our weekly night-session. We focussed on Movement Analysis and the Level 1 progression. At first it sounded very complicated, but its making more and more sense. I find myself analysing everybody on the hill now, while I'm going up the chair. Once we were done, we had dinner, and I had an early night.

Guy, Ian, Scott, Amy & James

Yet another early start, but I've discovered that if I bring all my stuff to breakfast, I can get another 30 mins sleep, and at the moment the more the better!

Feeling better than ever after a good nights sleep, the first run today felt great. After a few warm up runs, which are now more technical (The Hurdle - a black), we had a stretch and few practise demos then went inside for a short time to do some Movement Analysis. This time in more detail, with video clips, using the template of Profile, Detect, Correct. This essentially involves describing the rider, working out their major problems, then creating a lesson plan to fix it.

After lunch we went down the Exchange, into some good snow, and found some awesome kickers and a vert wall. Stu started teaching us how to do Alley-oop Mc-twists and 90 rolls. Although none were truly successful, it was fun throwing ourselves upside down. Then on some of the smaller kickers we started doing 180s and 360s and Pat even managed a 540!

Bungee Day! Had to be up at 7am so last night wasn't too big. By going at 8am for the jump we got a free DVD-bargain! The journey up to the jump was scary enough, the road looked like it could give way at any moment and to me it looked like we were travelling through a scene in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre - an old barn, burnt out caravan, old fashion lorry etc. Everyone looked scared as they jumped but did it no problem. I on the other hand couldn't make my legs work. It took 3 countdowns before I did it. Finally jumping the 440ft was the most amazing experience of my life... so I did it again. That time was a lot easier.

For the last 2 days we've been practicing teaching in "Team Jim". Hopefully after another few days we'll be ready for the Exam. Its tough trying to be professional, fun, calm, and original all at once. I think most of us are far better off pretending to be 10 year old students than the instructors we need to be next Tuesday!

We were down on the double chair most of the day, trying to get that teaching figured out.

Such a hard day, lots of practice for all! Guest Services lecture was provided by a woman called Michelle to help us with our communication skills for when we become instructors – fingers crossed. Early night tonight with a spot of cheeky manual reading – hooray!

My Birthday! After a sleepy drive up the mountain expecting a day of planning lessons for the CSI, we were surprised to have a day of purely free-skiing. We had lunch in a nice pizza restaurant half way up the mountain, but didn't stop for long due to the perfect conditions.

Later that evening all 43 of us headed into Queenstown for a meal. As always the night moved into the Buffalo Bar for more fun. I have lots of messages all over the t-shirt I was wearing. After that is a little hazy and from the stories and photos, I think it was an amazing night.

Will getting psyched

...After a practice session at the Remarkables before the Cert, Will turned round to me and said "we should go sky-diving".

Half an hour later we were on a minibus out to a private airfield in Frankton. This was the first time I've ever really thought of jumping out of a plane at 12000 ft but it seemed like a good idea. After a safety brief, we were in the plane skimming mountain tops. We got the green light to jump. At this point the two solo divers jumped out of the plane. This was the point the slightest feeling of doubt enter our minds. Will jumped first, followed 30 seconds later by Tommy, then myself. After 45 seconds of freefall the parachute opened. This was at 5500ft at which point we could take in the amazing view. We touched down a few minutes later with the adrenalin pumping. Definitely an experience to remember.’

In the evening all of us skiers went into town for a CSI meeting where we met the examiners, had a short talk on movements, and put into the exam groups. We were a bit disappointed not to have the only hottie in NZ in our group. CSI starts tomorrow!

By lunch time it was clear that we all still had some work to do to pass this one. On a break we heard about Robin doing the one thing you don't want to do when on the chair with your examiner...she fell off! After lunch the sun came out making the afternoon a lot better than the morning (-8), we spent much of the afternoon skiing off-piste which was awesome fun, and hope its a good sign that we don't need as much training on our teaching or demos, and not that Colin has just given up on us already.

Got back to the hotel and came up with lesson plans for Friday. Its going to be a long week!

Ripping it up...

Second day of the CSI.

Much better weather and the snow was great, we started out by finishing the teaching part by lunch, and then went out and did some sic skiing in the afternoon, hitting some serious off-piste. This was followed up by an hour bus back, as we're at the Remarkables this week, so we missed Home and Away.

Celebration after 96% success rate…

Last day of CSI! All though this is just the entry level exam, the pressure and nerves are hard to shake off. The exam only actually went for 30 mins for each person today, as we were all tested on our ability to teach a given scenario. The rest of the time, most people went skiing/boarding, and had a play in the park too.

All but two passed out of 43, so it wasn't bad going at all! Tonight everyone celebrated in a big way, with cheap drinks now that we're instructors!

Another day of clear blue skies and sun - life is tough here in New Zealand!

Toby's group concentrated mainly on short turns, as did Jims. Who knows what Bens group did? The Snowboarders were encouraged to throw themselves off jumps as they started to focus on the freestyle aspect of their Stage 1 exams.

In the evening we had a presentation into an introduction to our Avalanche Awareness Course. It was an early night for most as we prepare for the 8AM bus to the Remarkable!

Thursday 17th August by Jonny Mawhinney

Today we're up at The Remarks again, this time for the Avalanche course. The boarders spent their day throwing themselves off jumps and rails, with varied success.

The skiers learned how to use avalanche transceivers, skied steep off-piste chutes, and learned about snowpack. The hike up to the chutes was a bit of a shock for some people, but worth it.

It was a fun day for most (apart from the lazy) and we learned to respect the ski patrol a lot more...gnarly job!

Last day at the Remarks. We got a real taste of just how quickly NZ weather can change-blue Skies to Gale force Blizzard in 20 mins. There was some good skiing/riding to be had in the morning, with the chutes easily the most popular among the group. As the weather progressively got worst the boarders made the decision to head home. We skiers were a bit more hardcore and stayed up. This call backfired as we got stuck up the mountain. During a long ride down, we passed a bus on its side in a ditch!

Powder day!

"No friend on a powder day". Jen was the first to fall victim to Jims Ethos...She was left at the bottom for not being early! Everyone felt the same, wanting to make the most of probably the best day of skiing during our time here. There was not much standing around as groups raced to get first tracks on every bit of terrain Coronet has to offer. Still no sign of Dahj, who is supposedly stuck in Wanaka, although as he was in charge of all the heli-ski money I wouldn't be surprised if he on his way to Mexico.

Well the weekend was amazing. Some people went bungee jumping, some went paragliding. Oh.... did I mention Heli-skiing! What an amazing day. Sunny, no wind.... perfect weather. There were 40 of us, two helicopters and 10 guides. We split up into groups of 4, and were shuttle up and down to different spots each time, with each run just perfect snow. We had two runs, then lunch. Lunch was as incredible as the riding, with meats and salads, pizza, sushi, soup, cake, chocolate, biscuits, sweets, and coffee and tea. The guide built us a table out of snow, put a sheet over it, and we all tucked in. We got another two more runs afterwards as well, four in total. Everyone was grinning from ear to ear all day, and all night! Anyway, I'll let the photos do the talking... go here >> to check them out.

So everyone is on the pre-course and exam for the Stage 1. Lots of hard work, long days, and quite a bit of pressure. Spring is here too, so the snow is nice and slushy, which can be good, but difficult for some demos, due to its soft and bumpy nature.

We'll find out Friday how everyone has gone, so fingers crossed, and stay tuned.

First I saw a sign for the "Bruce Highway" which made me laugh. We we're on our way to Mungalli Falls and stopped at the Boulders to swim which was lovely and then it was off to a croc farm. There were Emus and Kangaroos everywhere and some really big crocs-Gregory was the biggest, 5.3 metres, and he had been taken there because he kept eating a local farmers cows! After a tour and a walk around, we got to hold some baby crocs and snakes. Jonnie was terrified of his snake and dangled it by its tail, whilst it went for him. I loved baby croc! Apparently Mark will only hold big snakes so he didn't hold these ones.

When we got to Mungalli we were taken to another lagoon deep in the rainforest, which we almost had to beat our own track to get to. There was a nice rock-jump there too.

That night we were on a glow worm hunt and Terry told us about Barking Spiders and I cried ( I'm terrified of even pictures of spiders). We saw no spiders but lots of amazing glow worms. "Gee-wizz wacky-doo" as Terry says.

below Abseiling

Today began with another rainforest trek and in the middle was a huge waterfall that me and Dahj swam in first, the lads are a bunch of wimps. I got quite close and ended up with grit in my hair that was coming down with the water. The rainforest in this area had been devasted by a cyclone four months earlier. Though recovering amazingly fast, there was still signs, such as an enormous tree that had been torn in two!

After lunch we were abseiling, everyone had a go and there were some nervouse faces. Mark and Riccardo and I went down forwards too, but I ended up falling at the top- it was hard!

Later that day we went to a Land-Slide- a slide made out of the land! You sit on a rubber mat and slide down a plastic water slide. Jonny went first and it looked scary, so after a few went me and Ella made the mistake of going in tandem. It was fun until we reached the water, where I headbutted Ella and left a tooth mark on her! I went one-at-a-time after that. I think Alex was loving it the most, going forward, backwards, spinning and sideways.

Cathedral Fig

Today we went White Water Rafting! It was so much fun. There was a girls raft and boys raft. The girls were much better. This was on the Tully river, in the "wettest part of Australia" (due to a three month wet-season). It was wet today too, and drizzled all day. We were given commands the whole way down by the guide, such as "forward paddle, back paddle, lean left, get down", while he steered the boat. At one stage the boys got really stuck, and it took 5 men 7 1/2 mins to get them out! We had a BBQ halfway down the river, then got going again. Near the end, our guide played a bit of a trick on us, and got us to all go to the back of the raft, as we went down a small waterfall- making us lose our balance and fall in.

On our way back to Mungalli we stopped at an enormous fig tree, called the Cathedral Fig, for obvious reasons.

below Termite mound

Today we left Mungalli Falls and headed west over The Great Dividing Range and into outback savannah, to Undara. This is a big change in scenery very quickly, from rich rainforest, to dry bushland. We stopped at a termite mound, Gee-wizz wacky-doo, and a big mango tree in the middle of a big long straight road, with a sign its had since it was a seed, saying "Please water me".

At Undarra we stayed in big permanent tents, with real beds inside. The place was made up of old railway carriages and was really nice. There were Kangaroos and Wallaroos bouncing around too. We had a tour of the Lava-tubes, which are giant tunnels made from lava cooling at the top, and continuing to flow below. There were lots of volacanos in this area, only 100 thousand years ago, and these are from a huge eruption that lava flowed for 100 km across the valley.

Before dinner, we had another tour, this time to relax, spot some wildlife, and watch the sunset from a rocky outcrop above everything. Ed got drunk on the champagne we were given. We then went to watch hundreds of tiny bats head out from a cave after dusk. It was amazing have hundreds of bats wizzing around a metre from our heads, and not touching us. Amazing because they are blind too. Ed said to Alex " wow, you can really hear the ultra-sound". I'll put that one down to the champagne.

For dinner, we sat in lovely re-furbished railway carriages. A lot had Kangaroo, which was a first for them.Terry had built us a fire for afterwards, and we sat around that till bed.
