LAST WEEK OF VERBIER 10 WEEK SKI INSTRUCTOR COURSE 2015: CONGRATULATIONS AND AU REVOIR

Week 10 of the Verbier 10 week ski instructor course and the trainees may have finished the course, but are in fact just beginning their onwards journey, whether that’s staying in Verbier as a Ski Instructor, trekking Kilimanjaro or another gap year we wish everyone the best of luck, and thanks for another epic course!

The finish is near…but it’s not the end!

At the end of last week, Jon sat down with all of our trainees to discuss with them what they needed to do in order to be successful with the last part of their BASI level two.  For some, there was very little to improve on while others still have some work and training to do over the weekend.

Throughout the week the exams continue in the same format – training and practice lessons throughout the day with video analysis on the mountain and then back to the chalet in the evening for lectures and discussions.

With the exam nerves obvious for all in Chalet Terrier this week, the dinner table conversation has revolved mostly around how one can best improve Central Theme skills and which drill is best suited to teaching which skill. When our team aren’t discussing their lessons, their reminiscing over their favourite memories of the course and their time in Verbier!

For some, it will involve a specific day’s skiing: perhaps the Vallee Blanche trip to Chamonix, which was both exhausting and exhilarating, or maybe the freestyle day with Marco. For others, it’s those moments of triumph on or off the slopes: success with the level one exams or, the ultimate challenge within Verbier’s nightlife: locating the secret secret bakery: the more elusive of the two late-night eateries provides roast beef sandwiches to satisfy those midnight cravings!

What’s next?

By the time Friday came around, our team were definitely looking forward to the next stage of their adventures. While most are staying in resort, with Saturday morning’s check out comes not a goodbye but an au revoir for two of our team: Ed is returning to the UK to prepare for his Kilimanjaro trek, while Billy is getting ready for his next gap-year adventure to the oriental delights of China – good luck and safe travels to you both!

Our final six are staying in resort, diving in to the job market as new ski instructors for the final few months of the season. While we would love to spend the time to congratulate every single one of our trainees, one in particular deserves a special mention: Joe Brown undoubtedly earns our Most Improved Skier badge (if we had one. Which we don’t.) Having closely missed the mark on his Level 1 exam before Christmas, Joe had a full week’s re-sit the week before his Level 2. Stepping up to the challenge of a gruelling 3 weeks of assessments, Joe approached them with enthusiasm and tenacity, successfully completing both, and Friday afternoon found him sitting happy with a smile on his face and a beer in his hand, making all the hard work worthwhile – nice work Joe!

Massive thank you as always to our friends at Element Ski School for all their hard work and dedication, and another successful course. To all of our trainees…ahem newly qualified Ski Instructors, we wish you the very best of luck for what comes next, be it university after teaching for the rest of the season, a career in the mountains or something completely different. Stay safe and stay in touch!
